Autodesk Completes Softimage Acquisition

autosoft Maya owner Autodesk announced that it completed its acquisition of Avid’s Softimage business unit, a purchase originally revealed in late October and valued at approximately $35 million.

Autodesk plans to sell standalone versions of 3D software products SOFTIMAGE|XSI and SOFTIMAGE|Face Robot, and intends to continue developing these products. Character animation system SOFTIMAGE|Cat is expected to be integrated into the Autodesk 3ds Max product line, while the SOFTIMAGE|Crosswalk interoperability solution will be integrated with Autodesk’s own interoperability technology.

Autodesk Buys Softimage for $35 Million

Autodesk, known for its 3ds Max and Maya software used throughout the video game industry, today announced the acquisition of rival firm Softimage from Avid Technology. Autodesk is acquiring “substantially all of the assets of Avid’s Softimage business unit for approximately $35 million.”

Montreal-based Softimage was founded in 1986 and is known for its flagship product SOFTIMAGE|XSI, which is a 3D animation software solution used by a number of entertainment companies and game companies, including Digital Domain, Ubisoft, Sega, Capcom, and others.
