The Tech Behind Assassin’s Creed II

For Assassin’s Creed II, Image Metrics worked closely with Ubisoft Montreal to coordinate the cut scene facial animations that would later be used in the final version of the game. Ubisoft provided Image Metrics with everything from character style guides to pose libraries, and live video capture from within the voice over booth during the games’ dialogue recording sessions. The team at Image Metrics then took the footage from the recording sessions and processed it through the company’s proprietary image analysis process, which takes two pixel-for-pixel passes of every frame of the video.
The first pass gauges general elements of an actor’s face – distance and positioning between eyebrows, lips, eyes, etc. – and creates a rough 3D model from the 2D image. Image Metrics analysts assist the system by categorizing specific pixels as eye pixels, mouth pixels, etc. Once tagged, the system recognizes jaw and eyebrow movement, and lip syncing.
